Who are some players that you guys feel deserve to be in the Hall of Fame of their respective sport but have yet to be elected?
Here are the ground rules for consideration:
- Per Hall of Fame rules, the player must have been retired for 5+ seasons from his respective sport
- The player must have been passed over at least twice during his period of eligibility
Here are just some to come to my mind:
Football
- Cris Carter - was neck and neck with Jerry Rice in a lot of statistical categories while having to receive catches from a bunch of random quarterbacks; Jerry had the luxury of playing the majority of his career catching passes from Steve Young and Joe Montana - 2 Hall of Fame quarterbacks. Cris Carter had: Jeff George, Randall Cunningham, Daunte Culpeper, Wade Wilson, Warren Moon, Brad Johnson, etc. etc. I'm not knocking the caliber of quarterbacks that Carter played with, but rather the number of quarterbacks he had to play with. The QB-WR tandem is one of the most delicate in football in relation to chemistry, and he didn't have the luxury to build long-term chemistry with 1 or 2 guys the way Jerry did but still put up monster receiving numbers. Plus he was the best that ever done it when it came to one handed catches.
- Shannon Sharpe - Statistically, the one of the most prolific TE's in NFL history. Plus, he has 3 Super Bowl rings. I'm surprised he's not in yet.
- Ray Guy - he played before many of us were alive, but there hasn't been a punter since that has matched him in the NFL. Plus he's the only punter ever to be drafted in the 1st round.
- Daryl "Moose" Johnston - without him, we'd probably be saying Emmit who? He revitalized the fullback position in the NFL. In fact, I think he was the first true blocking full back to ever been selected for the Pro Bowl.
- Andre Reed - he was the Michael Irvin counterpart to the Buffalo Bills AFC dynasty in the 1990s. Thurman Thomas and Jim Kelly are in. No love for # 82?
BASKETBALL
- Dennis Rodman - I know offensively he wasn't anything special, but to be 6'7, 228 and average 13 rebounds a game over a 14 year career? That ranks him number 10 all time in that category. In fact, he's one of only 2 players in the top 20 all time in that category who is NOT in the Hall of Fame. He has a higher RPG average than Dwight Howard!! And let's not forget 5 rings!!
- Benard King - I don't remember much about his playing career (since I was child towards the end), but I remember him being a beast on early NBA video games LOL. Plus he's always named in a lot of sportswriter's Hall of Fame snubs list.
- Kevin Johnson - this may be a reach here, but I think he should get least some consideration.
I don't watch a lot of baseball, so I have real insight here. I will say that Pete Rose deserves to be in.
