Probably one of the best things I've ever bought: The Garmin Forerunner 405.

https://static.garmincdn.com/en/products/010-00658-10/g/cf-md.jpg

Mine came with the Heart Rate monitor, which is really useful for the non-running/biking type workouts.

So a quick rundown of what's on this thing..
-GPS
-Interval training (by distance or time)
-Heart rate monitor, which allows for heart rate training (more on this in a second)
-Wireless Sync to Garmin software/website (more in this below)
-Virtual Partner - It uses your distance to track you vs the pace of a virtual opponent.

GPS/Wireless Sync

This thing sometimes catches GPS signals indoors at a lot of places and there's no waiting to find a signal outdoors. It's really fast, unlike a lot of other watches I've seen.

What's cool about the software/website, is you can go home and it wirelessly uploads all your GPS and heart rate data. from there, you can track and compare your workouts, view progress, and map out your runs on google maps/google earth. You can check things like elevation as well and compare speed/elevation vs heart rate to see what you need to work on.

http://connect.garmin.com/api/content/image/features/helpful-analysis-01.jpg

You can also play back your workout to check if any particular area is giving you trouble.

Heart Rate Monitor
Also nice is the heart rate monitor - probably most useful for guys like Eso doing Crossfit. There's a whole ton of books out there on heart rate training, but the basic premise is that there are two main upper training zones you want to be in depending on your goals.

The first is 80-90% of your Max HR is the Anerobic Zone, which is basically the point where your body starts to really push itself. This is where you build stamina and endurance, and a little bit of speed. I've been limiting my running to this zone for the most part, without doing too much speed/hill work in the upper 90-100% zone. What's also nice about this is as you get stronger, your heart works less to do the same amount of work, so you need to work harder to stay in this zone - this is what makes you better.

Also, this is where your body starts craving oxygen - at 80% your body begins to feel an oxygen deficiency, at 90% it starts to hit harder. Training through that pain is what stretches you past your comfort point and abilities. The recovery time from this is much shorter than going all out (90-100%), so that also makes it a nice zone to train in. There's a less likely chance you'll burn out.

The 90-100% zone is basically for short interval training. It's almost impossible to train in this zone all the time (even for pro-athletes), but it's good in bursts. Here you can really push yourself, and if you include hills in your running, you'll dip into this zone as your heart works harder to climb. The downside of this zone is overtraining here could result in injuries - your heart can't pump enough oxygen throughout your body to recover.

Also, if you're just starting your program, you can train in the 70-80% zone - the Aerobic Zone, to get yourself ready to work into a consistent workout plan. This is sort of a "going through the motions" zone where you can build proper form, but still see small improvements.

Interval Training
The interval training is nice for runners/bikers - it even beeps for those who don't like looking down at their watch because they cheat. You can pre-plan out run/recovery times and not have to worry about checking constantly. You can also set it by distance if that's how you like to train, but time is more versatile for things that aren't distance based.

I think there's even a way to set yout target HR in there too, but I haven't played with it enough to find out.

Virtual partner
If you're competitive, you can set up a virtual partner. The best way I can describe it is the "ghost" races on mario kart, where you chase your old record and try to beat it. Haven't played with this mode much either, but I can see the use in it if you're trying to train at a certain pace.

There's also a whole ton more other features I really haven't played with, and the watch is water resistant.

So yeah, if you're serious about working out, get this watch. It's between $250-300 new retail, but I got brand new on e-bay for under $240.

and that's why the thread is called "for the runners and fitness junkies on here..."

I know boogz and eso are always busy with the fitness on here, as well as a few others. Also, I remember Shawn talking about wanting to get into working out and whatnot a couple of times, and this would be a great tool for him.

A couple of other fitness-related tips for the gents:

- Hot Yoga. Don't laugh, the women in there are fine. Also a great place to bring a date - it works twofold, you get to size up your date's skills, and the other women at the studio will start coming up to you next time.

- "Women's Only" bootcamps are a good place to get an insane workout and meet fit women. I happened to befriend a few instructors (male and female) and they all said that the sessions are EXACTLY the same for the mixed and women only sessions, they just do the WO ones "to keep the pervs out" which makes the women more comfortable. So how do you get in? BEFRIEND the instructors, or get vouched for by one of the students. I've never had so much pussy thrown at me in my whole life. There's all sorts of hormones pumping through them and being the only guy there, you're like a piece of meat being thrown into the lion's den.

- Running Clinics/Races. There are some fine, fine, fine, (did i mention fine?), FINE women who run (espeically if you likw tall girls - a lot run, dunno why). And they all love a man who can run/teach. I'm already a group leader there an I started in March. Married or single, it doesn't seem to matter, I'm always surrounded by fit women and have been given (without even asking) a couple of numbers to "come by my place and run sometime". mmm hmm..... Ditto for races - great palce to meet women from all over the city with a common interest. And following some tight, fit asses has given me that second wind 3/4 the way though a race allowing me to beat my times.

Seriously, get on that fitness game.

depends what you mean.

If you mean, does it show what the trail looks like - it sort of can on google earth (with their satellite imagery stuff. If it's on a street, you can see it in street view, but not any off-street stuff. Of course, it can get elevations everywhere.

I'm pretty sure there's a way you can set up a trail and upload it to your watch.

If you mean downloadable trails/paths - you can upload/download other people's trails from the website. Never tried it though, because all of the trails are downtown. It's a cool feature though - a couple of people bought the same (or compatable) watches in my climic, so we're going to start setting up downloadable routes for predefined distances.

To be honest, I haven't been devoting THAT much time to it, and I don't really think about it as training - you meet people and it just becomes more of a social activity.

I put in about 1hr - 1.5 hrs running the clinics on mon, weds and sun, and a few more hours tuesday/thursdays rowing on my dragonboat team. Again, the social element is great, and I've been seeing a huge improvement in my upper body strength and have been slimming down all around while building some massive shoulders and chest. My core still needs a ton of work though.

Also, added bonus is all the extra ass that's been around. I seriously don't really club/hit up bars much anymore, so that time I used to spend chasing ass, I have to work out and have the ass chase me (literally - I'm at the head of the pack).

The goal is a marathon by the end of next summer, so I'll be running though the winter. I should be good to go by then.

running in the winter is the hardest. especially for cats like us who live in colder climate..its hard to roll your ass out of bed, look at the temp and that shit read 25 or someshit. Up here its hard to run at night because it gets dark mad early like 4pm. early or late, its still cold as shit.

i been working out since 11/26/10

def noticed my energy is much better. I did detox twice so far in that period in time..

feel way better than i used too....pretty much i weigh 225, on the athletic but still a lil chub side....i started out at 222 but it seems because i have been lifting the weights ive bulked up slightly...

im on the cardio pretty much everyday for an hr, on my run/walk incline shit...

ive stopped the fast, fried foods thing. only have had beef 2-3 times in that period, alot of chicken breast, fish, and my new love--turkey burgers and turkey sphaghetti lol..

i wanna slim down and tone up a little...not tryna be all chiseled out cut but if it happens im game..

any ideas for me? i notice a huge difference since lifting weights but its really going slow and my slight gut is looking better but its still there....

imma a 5'5 stocky cat btw...

tryna get this lil fold i got under the armpit to leave, too much neck going on, and the gut is what im aiming at....

I suggest doing CrossFit workouts. You get more out of your workout in less time. I lost 30 pounds in 2 months, and kept the weight off for 2 years. Once you start doing CF workouts you will see how much time is wasted in "normal" workout routines.

In NN. We do Tuesday runs at Heritage on the track. We do our interval training that day. Then on Thursdays, we go on Langley to do an 8 mile route, and sometimes add a couple more miles on after we finish the route. Saturdays we swim at the Mid town rec center (to train for a possible triathlon) then run afterward-anywhere from 5-10 miles afterward. PM me if you need details. The trainer is doing this session privately. We will still be having the summer boot camp on the beach starting in the spring sometime.

I wish i had more of a passion for exercise. I know its not easy, and nobody initially WANTS to do so, but I'm super non-motivated.

The only thing i can bring myself to do is jog and play basketball. I can jog forever as long as i got an ipod and can bump music, and basketball, i'll play that for hours at a time (lungs permitting). Any type of weightlifting, medicine ball, pull ups, etc I've never stuck with more than 2 weeks lol. I've been able to stick with push ups though for the last 2 years.

I guess its more of an aerobic vs strength thing.

For me, it's just the whole physical challenge of it all. I like doing out of the ordinary workouts to challenge myself..to have something to push for, and then accomplish it. It just gives me a sense of personal accomplishment... and an endorphin rush..lol

Exercise does it for me..lol

Some days, I'm not super motivated, but once I get into the workout in the thick of things, I'm glad I got my ass up to do something.. :-)

Well if it makes you feel better, I don't get the rush unless I'm working HARD. When I run, it kicks in around the 5th or 6th mile. yo what do yall think about the sauna suit?? i been using it, seems like i sweat a hella-lot...its sortttaaaa kiiinndddaaa trimming me down, but overall i feel better using it once or twice a week....its relaxing...

I've tried them before, but really it seems like you're just losing water weight, and it goes right back as soon as you rehydrate yourself. Well, at least that's what it did for me.

lol@ Banana recovery shakes.

LOL @ Smooth. I actually have to credit my white bball coach for teaching me that exercise. In HS i could never dunk until i started doing them joints. I swear I did them for like 3-4 months and I saw a definate vertical increase.

Box jumps will get your right. Especially if you're using a 24" or taller box. The tallest I've ever used was like 40"

give a martial arts gym a look..theyre everywhere now from 703 down to 757.

i did cardio, muay thai, and jiu jitsu classes...and then an mma class that combined everything. never had my body pushed that hard, and i felt better than when i played sports in HS. a lot of nfl and nba guys are hitting mma gyms now.

my mom does marathons. props to people who can just run for the hell of it. thats not me..lol.

I haven't been on a basketball court in a minute, but I doubt I can dunk. The way I do box jumps that high it's more of a flexibility thing because I bring my knees really high. Similar to what this guy did in this vid.

When I used to coach track I had them do box jumps after practice. It was hilarious because their legs would already be burned out so even my stud athletes were tripping and falling on the smallest box.

As far as jumping the high ones, it IS all about flexibility. I have a decent vertical, but I used to be able to jump over a fence without running or taking a step mainly because, like Eso said, I was flexible enough to get my legs up.

Boogz is 40" so doing a box jump that high might be a challenge for her. :D

I felt bad yesterday when I'm having to retire my airmax 2009. I went to a running store and got fitted, he gave me some brooks running shoes...i didn't like the fit, i felt like i was running barefoot and did not like it...i need more cushioning to be comfortable, so I just got the airmax 2010. i think im going to buy another pair since they are on sale that way i can swap them out, either that or the lunars...

Here's a taste of some of the things we do in CrossFit. Once you start doing this stuff you can't help but be motivated. It's like you're in a race against other people every workout.

That's the great thing about CF. Everyone does the same workouts, they are just scaled down to your fitness level. We have people in their 50's, pregnant women, etc doing the same workouts I do.

I respect that Crossfit program and can see how it would benefit greatly but....

everybody on those videos look like animals...like steroid pumping, american gladiator type WWE wrestlers.... Being healthy, fit, in shape is my goal...but I'm not trying to be the ultimate Spartan warrior. Its no reason I need to be doing olympic weight lifting, i'm not going to the olympics...I just want to be able to lift my kids and toss them around. I definitely respect the program, and am impressed with the results...but that wouldn't work for me, personally.

Mercury

I'm kinda like you gift. I try to stress to some of my homeboys that are into crossfit stuff that their goals are different than mines. I just like to do a lil something to stay healthy and in shape, enough to keep me from passing out when I go up and down the court lol. I have zero care about being cut up, building muscle, none of that. I respect those who do, at the end of the day its a personal choice.

All the things yall just listed can be achieved through CF. That's the thing that you gotta understand. The people in these vids are the elite athletes who compete at the Games. Like I said before we have elderly and pregnant women working out at our gym, and yall tryna tell me that they can do more than yall? I doubt it. CF isn't about becoming all cut up. If you go to my gym's website you'll see that most of the members look like regular people. Plus overall our workouts are done in less amount of time, and are more effective than the workouts people do at globo gyms that take hours. As far as the Olympic lifting goes, if you can do those lifts I'm pretty sure picking up a kid will be easy. I know it has helped a lot with my son.

in VA.. i never lost a fight in my life but i just got bodied.

you are right eso, don't mind me. I have no business in a gym anyways

A MERCURY GYM VISIT:
Jog for 1-2 miles.
Pant and weeze like a smoker for 15 minutes
Find exercise bike in front of a TV that has good game
Ride the bike on hardest resistance level for 1/2 hrs
Hears basketball dribble
Plays basketball for rest of visit

03-10-2011, 12:38 PM
I used to hate getting on any kind of treadmill, bike, elliptical machine, etc because they are just boring to me. I hated just being in one spot for that long. I guess that's why CF grabbed me because I get bored with workout routines really quick.

Mercury

im a media junkie. you give me some music or television and I'll be stationary for 7-8 hours at a time.

You throw a martin marathon on TV and give me an exercise bike and I'll mess around and ride the bike the entire time (except when its time to eat)

my mom said when i was a baby whenever i acted up she put me in a rocking chair and sat me in front a tv, and she said I'd sit there endlessly until somebody either moved me or i fell asleep lol
