View Full Version : Verizon Fios vs. Comcast Which one is better?

Aight I know i made a thread about this a year or so ago on the old board.
Moving in a few weeks and right now im divided on what service to get.

I am a spoiled brat when it comes to HD TV.
Which one delivers the best HD picture?

Verizon's early termination fee is kinda turning me away. heard its $360.00

Pricing: for the people that have either service how much y'all pay?
im looking to get the ultimate package.

Was thinking about going with direct tv but again im not sold on the early termination fees and unsure if my balcony is point south for me to even get it.

Comcast just won a big court decision trying to block Net neutrality
plus the have the data usage limit so that's kinda turning me away too.
Any comcast users on here have issues going over the 250gig monthly limit?

Well, I Verizon came through and busted my sewer line when installing the FIOS lines in my neighborhood, then I had to argue with them for 2 weeks for them to come fix it. They did $2k of damage. Luckily I got all my money back from them. Comcast have never broken my sewer line.

So I choose comcast.

The HD channels look good on FIOS, but as I said a few weeks ago, they try to nickel and dime you on them joints. Right now the only HD channels I have are the basic cable and my premium channels. I have one HD/DVR box and two regular boxes, HBO and Cinemax and my bill is like $180/month. That's for unlimited long distance and internet.

There were some mix-ups with the bill a few times but no more than what I had with Cox. Plus when they fixed the bill they hooked me up for a year with Cinemax and an extremely reduced bill.

Makes sense. If you got a one year lease on your apartment then signing a two year contract with Verizon is stupid.

I'm just hating because I don't even have the option. Crappy charter or even more crappy DSL is all I can pick from. We have AT&T UVerse for fiber down here and they aren't offering service in my area.

funny u say that. my girl has directv cause its the only choice where she lives.other than comcast.

there was a storm thursday night. I was watching Bellator FC on FSN HD. Cut out for about 20min and i missed an entire fight.

it doesnt cut out everytime it rains, but if you get a decent storm with some cloud cover, directv becomes very unreliable.

had about 3 or 4 rain storms and dtv cut out everytime.

comcast is the Devil, satan, and beezlebub all wrapped in one

They screwed my bill up on several occasions. Then cut my service off even though it was notated on my account that my bill was screwed up.

Keep in mind I've been with them since 2004 and NEVER missed a payment, yet out the blue they said I was 3 months behind, even though they accurately pointed out that I made a payment each month.

So they said "okay our bad"...then cut my service off. This has happened AT LEAST 10 times. When they do, I have to drive to staples mill, speak to a manager, then they cut it back on and give me a discount until the next time that they pull that same stunt.

The reason they keep adding payments to my plan is because everytime I move, they keep resetting my account to a new account, instead of just transferring services as I requested.

Depending on your location, Comcast may limit your file sharing internet speed and bandwith usage.

I dont have any problems playing games on Xbox Live. Most of the time I get host in MW2 and Halo matches, which is nice. Speed tests show my connection is as advertised. If I try and download a torrent or a file off usenet, the download will start quickly and then within 5 seconds its down to 1mb speed. Kinda sucks when i had 4-5mb with Fios.

They sent some comcast lady to our development the other week. she stopped by my place, probably cause she saw the dtv dish out back. first she asked if my mom was home, lol. i responded dont know, i dont live with her. she tried to talk me into switching to comcast cable. i said fine, if they take care of my dtv termination fee, and start carrying hdnet. next she asked me if i had internet. i said yeah i have comcast internet and it blows, tell those bitches to stop throttling the speed. lastly i told her to get a job with verizon when they get to the area, b/c they will be talking all the comcast customers.

With usenet, you should be using SSL preferably over port 443..its indistinguishable from encrypted web traffic from the ISP perspective. Can't be throttled (at least not without pissin off a whole lot of people).

Nearly 800,000 U.S. TV households 'cut the cord,' report says

Make no mistake: The big cable, satellite, and telco carriers are still sitting pretty with more than 100 million TV subscribers. Nevertheless, a new report claims that more and more viewers are "cutting the cord" in favor of watching their favorite shows via over-the-air antennas (remember those?), Netflix, or the Web.

TechCrunch has the scoop on a new report from the Toronto-based Convergence Consulting Group, and though the figures may not be a "serious threat" to the big cable and satellite carriers yet, the trend might eventually spell trouble for the like of Cablevision, Comcast, DirecTV, and Time Warner Cable.

To wit: Nearly 800,000 households in the U.S. have "cut the cord," dumping their cable, satellite, or telco TV providers (such as AT&T U-verse or Verizon FiOS) and turning instead to Web-based videos (like Hulu), downloadable shows (iTunes), by-mail subscription services (Netflix), or even good ol' over-the-air antennas for their favorite shows, according to the report.

Now, as TechCrunch points out, the estimated 800,000 cord cutters represent less than 1 percent of the 100 million U.S. households (give or take) currently subscribing to a cable/satellite/telco TV carrier, so it's not like we're talking a mass exodus here. But by the end of 2011, the report guesstimates, the number of cord-cutting households in the U.S. will double to about 1.6 million, and if the trend continues, well...

Even more trouble for the big carriers is the report's assertion that U.S. TV watchers are getting a taste for online video, with an estimated 17 percent of the U.S. TV audience watching at least one or two shows online in a given week last year, up from just 12 percent in 2008, and set to rise to 21 percent this year.

Personally, I find the temptation to cut the cord pretty enticing, especially whenever I get a load of my monthly $130 cable bill (which includes unlimited broadband and HD but no premium channels). Why am I paying so much for all the hundreds of channels that I rarely ever watch, anyway? Wouldn't it be easier — not to mention a lot cheaper — just to ditch my DVR and watch my favorite shows on iTunes and Hulu, catch up on the news via CNN.com, and be done with it?

There's one important factor that's keeping me from pulling my scissors out: live sports, and particularly ESPN, my 24-hour sports companion. Sure, as a football fan, I could keep up with the Jets and the Giants via over-the-air TV (although I'm not sure my landlord would be all that ecstatic about my installing a TV antenna on the roof of our Brooklyn brownstone), but without cable, I'd be left high and dry when it comes to Monday Night Football.

What about you? Anyone out there count themselves as one of the 800,000-plus cord-cutting households in the U.S.? If not, would you ever consider it, or are you too attached to basic cable?

Correction: This post originally said that 800,000 U.S. TV households "cut the cord" in 2009. They didn't all cut the cord in 2009; the number reflects how many had cut the cord by the end of 2009 — a somewhat important distinction. Apologies for the goof.

Sooooo my Direct TV/Verizon experience has not been great so far.
I decide to give them a call for a price quote as I was stuck in traffic driving to Springfield VA yesterday.

To make a long story short. I spoke to a rep who put me on hold for 5 minutes and threw me back into the Que. 2nd rep ask me how to spell the abbreviation of MD. He though it was spelled "MA". Our call got disconnected.
3rd rep acted like he had some sense but quoted me on a package I didn't which he claimed he had to set me up in the system for a reservation. So as of now they are scheduled to come install the shit on May 1st.
I told him i wanted the Premier Package
He quoted me this
which is 2 emails i received showing two totals NOT INCLUDING the quote for the internet.
tried to do the lil chat shit online to get more clarification of the actual total
and whoever said they can't pull up my information. I would have to call them and get transferred around and hung up on again for an hour.
