them bitches suck, especially if you get the cheapest ones.......
con's NO CD/DVD DRIVE....... that's the main & biggest con for me.......
if you gonna just look at the net with it, they cool....
any type of using programs beyond wordprocessing etc, cancel it, they slow as fuck.
I had them for the kids, one of them joints the mouse pad/click button won't work no more, stopped working when it wasn't that old but I lost the box, and the other one the internet just cuts the fuck off when it feels like it and you gotta reset it up....
it's like any problem/issue you have with windows, is amplified x10 with them shits cuz they operating on less memory and slower processing.
definately would no recommend them, unless the only thing your going to do is get on the net & look at videos, read etc.

I like them. They're relatively cheap, light, disposable and work really well for basic shit. (browsing, email, movies, youtube, wordprocessing/excel).
I rarely need a CD/DVD drive (I have a ton of usb hard drives/keys) so that's not a huge deal to me.
I have a main machine at home that's a Core-i7, so i don't need a beast on the road. It's good for logging into my home machine remotely if I need the extra power.
I keep mine ultra light, stripped off all the software I don't need, no saved passwords or files (use google docs). If I lost it, it wouldn't be worried about anything - I could easily pull another one off the shelf and be up and running in minutes.

My boys have alot of movies and cds so a cd/dvd drive is almost mandatory.. I dont want to encourage them to use thumbdrives..They might start stealing some of my vidz from my harddrive :eek:

yeah I agree, it just depends on what you use it for, to me a cd/dvd drive is a must.... that cancels them out completely as far as how I would use them. they are ok for my kids because they just look up disney and youtube songs, info for school etc. and they got a main computer also... i'd still say if possible get the laptop...
like g said, the main use for them shits is to have them on the road or something, where you can just kinda entertain & look up info on the fly. not really good for a main computer/work station.

I just download everything myself and have 2x 1.5 TB FireWire drives connected to the i7 that I use as a fileserver. All of my Media is on there, always on call. I can't be bothered with things like switching discs when there's technology that allows me to do it easier.
Also, like i said, this isn't my main machine. It's all about what you're going to use it for. The i7 is hooked up to my 46 inch LCD....so any movies/TV shows, I watch on there.
Though, I never understood the point of making a laptop a main machine - price for power it's a bad investment, and I don't really get any real work done on monitors that are 15 inches and smaller. It's always a struggle. Anything bigger is just begging for back problems.
And generally, the places I take my laptop aren't places I can really concentrate, so I don't get much work done
And if you're just foing to keep it at home, it's more economical to get a regular desktop PC. If portability isn't an issue, you get more for the money.

i wouldn't mind having a netbook on the road either. Of course money permitting I'd rather get a regular laptop but when I travel i just wanna be able to browse the net so I can pay my bills, email, so forth.
I already have a regular laptop but somehow the lens on the CD/DVD drive got damaged and it doesn't read, so I have an external drive, which defeats the purpose of having a laptop because it is no longer portable
This laptop is on its last legs anyway, so eventually i gotta re-up. But I'm hesitant because I'm saving up to get my own turntable set, and for that I will need a SEPERATE laptop for serato purposes ONLY. So eventually I'ma end up having to buy 2 computers. One for mixing (you can NOT have other programs on a computer that runs serato or you run the risk of crashing mid party, seen it happen LOL) and one just to use for everyday purposes

you can probably replace the CD/DVD drive for cheap.
It's usually held in place by about 1-3 screws, and them pops out. You pop the new one in, and then the screws back in.
You can probably grab this one for $7.96 (provided it's got the same connector, there's only one or two types): http://cgi.ebay.com/SLIM-CD-RW-DVD-LAPTOP-DRIVE-GCC-4244N-DRIVE-HLDS-LG-/350353563096?cmd=ViewItem&pt=PCC_Drives_Storage_Internal&hash=item5192b31dd8#ht_2554wt_1066

What about e-machines? I don't really have a huge need for a laptop, but now that I know I don't have one anymore it's messing with my mind. lol Is it possible to get anything worth having in the $2-350 range?

depends on what you do with it........
I personally can't live without a quad core desktop, cd/dvd/blu-ray drives.......
but if you don't do much on it, they can be cool
To be honest, I don't do anything on them. Occasionally, when I go out of town I use it for internet. Like I said, I really just want one because I know I don't have one anymore. When I was at the computer store the SALES guy said he didn't see the point of me buying one and that I should just save my money. lol I was thinking to myself, "I know his commission checks are weak."

hard to say cuz I just use my phone out of town to check the net, but I guess the convience factor of the laptop/netbook is easier because you can see the screen better, that's really the only better factor though

Exactly. I haven't used the DVD drive on my PC in years. I have a Windows Home Server. Its 2010.
But I do understand the laptop as a main machine. I take my laptop into the basement, upstairs in the Bedroom, outside on the patio. Its not about having a machine to use outside of your house. To me, its all about mobility inside your house. But I agree that its harder to get "work" done. But thats why you cop the dock and a good monitor for your home office.
How exactly does the Windows Home Server work, and how much is it?

How exactly does the Windows Home Server work, and how much is it?
Its an always on PC thats designed to be a centralized place for all of your files.
It has some good features.
easy to add harddrives to expand storage. (harddrives are added to the "storage pool", to the outside world 4 1TB drives looks like one big 4 TB drive)
File duplication options to protect against drive failure (its inefficient but it makes file recovery easy)
automated backup of all your PC.
makes it easy to setup remote access to your files (listen to the music on your home server at work).
I have all my music, movies, TV shows, MMA fight on it. The one I have has third-party software to make it act as a UPnP DLNA server (so I can stream music and videos to my PS3) and also a itunes music server. I got mine for $300. Best $300 I've spent in a long while.

realistically how much movies & music could you have that you actually use/listen 2?
I have 2 removable 1tb joints and they aren't even full and I have a ton of shit..... a home server seems useless unless your running a website or business off it? what are the pro's of it? wouldn't it pretty much render your machine useless? whats the speed like with the files coming off it?

The home server I have is 1TB but its expandable to 6TB. I'm going to buy a couple of 2TB drive for it in a few months.
Its hard to fill it with music alone. But it can easily be done with videos and games. A Blu-ray rip can run anywhere from 8 GB to 20 GB. A HD rip of 1 one hour long episode of a TV show is around 1.2 GB. 22 episodes in a season on average and you're looking at 26 GB per season.
I have 170 GB of MMA videos (most in SD..if I had HD vids, my drive would be full)..and my collection is no where near where I want it to be.
If I had all the TV shows that I wanted (all seasons of The Office, Weeds, Boondocks, The Universe, The Game, etc) in HD my harddrive would be full as well.

Also, I wish I had something like this 10 years ago. There are so many mp3s (older albums that are hard to find now, extremely rare songs, etc) that I've lost over the years and wish I could get back. So being able to recover from a harddrive failure is extremely important to me. Right now I don't have the file duplication turned on (you have to have more than one harddrive for it to work)..but as soon as I cop those 2TB drives, I'm turning it on. I don't want to lose any of my music ever again.
Another thing is wireless access to all my files. I used to put everything on external harddrives but if I wanted to watch a video on my PS3 I had to hook the drive up to my PC, transfer it the file to the external HD then hook the HD up to the PS3 to watch. It was a hassle. Now my files download directly to the home server and I just stream them to the PS3 whenever I want.

this seems interesting: http://www.jolicloud.com
It's a small linux-based OS that integrates cloud computing. It's built with things like google apps and social media in mind and has a pretty neat interface.
Apparently, the next version will let you log in and load your settings from any machine. This would make computers as close to disposable as they've ever come. You could use a netbook, lose/break it, buy a new one, reinstall the OS, login and have all your settings transferred.
Pretty sweet if you ask me. I wish there was a way to do this with the iPhone.
