CLEVELAND -- A person familiar with the announcement says LeBron James has won the NBA's MVP Award for the second straight year. The Cleveland Cavaliers star will receive the honor Sunday at the University of Akron.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the league has not yet announced the results of the vote.
James averaged 29.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.6 assists this season. He led the Cavs to 61 wins and the top seed in the postseason. Cleveland opens its second-round series against the Boston Celtics on Saturday.
The Plain Dealer of Cleveland first announced that James won the award.

Akron Bitches!!!!!!!!!!
MVP LeBron comes home

To receive his first NBA Most Valuable Player award, LeBron James returned to his old high school gymnasium at St. Vincent-St. Mary and had the student body as his witnesses.
On Sunday, he picked up his second Maurice Podoloff Trophy at the University of Akron's James A. Rhodes Arena, where the Irish played most of their games after the world discovered ''the Chosen One.''
There was already talk of what he will do for an encore.
If soon-to-be free agent James elects to stay in Cleveland and goes as owner Dan Gilbert quipped ''MV3'' next spring, there may be a celebration the likes of InfoCision Stadium has never seen.
''My initial plan was to do it outside at the football stadium, but we didn't know the weather report,'' James said. ''We didn't want it to rain on my parade.''
An enthusiastic crowd estimated at 3,000 gathered to fete Akron's favorite son as he received the NBA's highest individual honor. While the arena was far from filled, a few Zips students camped outside overnight to grab prime seats.
Drawing the most important people in James' life during his days growing up in the Rubber City, it might as well have been a birthday party for James. Attending were former St. V's coaches Dru Joyce II and Keith Dambrot, now the coach at UA, along with former Irish teammates Sian Cotton and Willie McGee. Seated up front were James' mother Gloria, his girlfriend Savannah Brinson (wearing a stunning pair of Christian Louboutin heels, spotted because of their signature red soles) and their two sons, LeBron Jr. and Bryce, along with Cavs' minority owner Usher Raymond.
Besides coach Mike Brown, General Manager Danny Ferry and Gilbert, the entire Cavaliers team attended. James called them up on stage, and guards Mo Williams and Delonte West filmed the festivities.
James was a landslide MVP winner, garnering 116 out of 122 first-place votes and becoming just the 10th player to capture the award in consecutive seasons. As part of the presentation, James also received a Kia Sorrento, which he donated to the Summa Foundation, which supports patient care, medical education and research.
Before the ceremony began, the atmosphere was festive. Two huge banners of James hung in the rafters next to Akron basketball greats. It seemed like nearly half the crowd was wearing Cavs jerseys or Witness T-shirts. A father and his two children were decked out in the newest James ''Hope'' tee, the likeness copied from a famous portrait of President Barack Obama. Saying he's always deluged with questions when he wears the shirt, the dad passed out slips of paper listing the Web site, http://www.HopeforLeBron.com.
''You always think you know what to expect until you come in and see all the people cheering for him and all the love that he gets,'' Cotton said. ''You think you know, but until you're in the moment, that's always more special.''
Some wondered why James needed such a public forum when he'll receive the trophy again from NBA Commissioner David Stern before tonight's Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics at Quicken Loans Arena.
Asked why he didn't hold a small news conference at the Q, James responded, 'I'm just a little kid from Akron.''
Those who know James well say they understood.
''This is another example of him just trying to give back to this community, which you have to be proud of,'' Dambrot said.
''He's always trying to help people who have been good to him. Whether he tried to help us or not, this is a big deal for us. We really appreciate it.''
James said Dambrot was a big reason he chose to come back to Rhodes Arena.
''It was a no-brainer this year to come back to Akron,'' James said. ''This was like our second homecourt. This actually turned into our homecourt. Keith Dambrot being the head coach of this university had a lot to do with it and the city itself had a lot to do with it.''
While James may have arrived in a Maybach, Joyce didn't feel he was putting on airs.
''This is genuine from his heart,'' Joyce said. ''He loves Akron. These are special places to him, St. V and the University of Akron. This is really where we played more of our home games.
''It was a lot of fun him bringing it back. We appreciate it. So many times guys forget where they're from and he hasn't done that. It speaks volumes about who he is.''
James peppered his talk with references to his hometown.
''Every day that I wake up, I understand I'm not only carrying myself as an individual, I'm carrying this city to bigger and better heights,'' he said.
But the huge elephant in the arena was whether everyone was witnessing James' going-away party. He'll become a free agent on July 1 and is expected to tour the country as teams try to woo him away from the Cavaliers.
The ending to his speech, which he admitted was done without notes, added to the uncertainty.
''Akron, Ohio, is my home. Akron, Ohio, will always be remembered. Akron, Ohio, is my life and I love this city,'' he said.
The ''will always be remembered'' line sounded like something you would write in the high school yearbook of a classmate you'll probably never see again.
Dambrot and a community pray it isn't so.
''I have no inside information, but if I had to bet my house, I'd bet he stays in Cleveland,'' Dambrot said.
''He's got to do what's best for his family. I think he'll stay, from what I know on the inside, how he is as a person.''

Best player on the planet right now.
I just hope we get to see the Lakers Cavs series to settle all of this once and for all.

the problem with him was that he plays for a new team in Oaklahoma
This is the most I actually got a chance to see him play.

Has to be a lock right now unless the Spurs can keep up their good play.
will be at the game tonight.
Northeast Ohio needs this bad.
Read on a few blogs about people hating on Bron having a event to receive his MVP Trophy. Its not about being cocky or showboating. Hes trying to give Northeast Ohio more exposure. There is nothing here, especially Akron. About a block away from the hotel im in there is a Bridge name "The All American Bridge" (Google it)
That bridge has one of the highest suicide rates in the country. 4 People have jumped this year. Economy is horrible. If the cavs lose all of Ohio will go into deep depression.
This pic is for the haters:D

All the stars get hate. He couldn't possibly get more hate than Kobe. The only star I can think of that never got hated on was Tim Duncan.

What did John Thompson say?
And remember, the Cavs eliminated the Wizards a few years ago so there may still be some animosity

so because John Thompson likes Kobe, that makes him a Lebron hater? That has nothing to do with hate, thats his personal preference of who he thinks is the better player.
