View Full Version : Hulu Plus + Netflix = Better than Cable?

This morning I canceled my premium channels subscription on cable and saved $50 a month (much to my wife's chagrin who was anticipating the start of Season 3 of Nurse Jackie). I'm currently a Netflix subscriber and love it, but I was also considering subscribing to Hulu Plus as well. I figured with Netflix plus Hulu Plus, I would hardly have the use for cable anymore. The only channels I watch on cable are ESPN, NBATV, and The NFL Network. I believe the the NFL Network has some shows available on Hulu Plus, and I'm a Verizon customer, so I also have the NFL app which has live streaming for the NFL Network anyway.

My monthly cable bill now (minus the internet) is about $80 a month. A Hulu Plus subscription in addition to my Netflix subscription would run me about $22 a month. Plus I'm also a Rhapsody subscriber which is also $10 a month. So for $80 a month (Rhapsody, Netflix, Internet, + Hulu), I can have 4 facets of entertainment covered (TV, Movies, Music, and Internet) for less than half of what I was paying before.

Any current Hulu Plus subscribers here?

I'm not sure. I know there's a couple available on Netflix though. If they start offering current Showtime channels on Hulu, then I definitely would cancel cable then.

Netflix has a few Showtime shows available for streaming. For example, they have the first two seasons of Dexter and the first five seasons of Weeds available. My wife really loves Nurse Jackie though, so I feel kind of bad for canceling our HBO and Showtime just before the new season is about to start. She might have to just wait for that season to hit DVD since the previous two are available on Netflix.

I want this season's episodes of Californication and Nurse Jackie.

HBO hasn't had any new shows come on for a couple months so I just cancelled it. I planned on getting it again when the shows come back on, but if this Hulu joint has it I'm not gonna bother.

My setup is better than cable and better than Netflix + Hulu.

I can get any Showtime show in HD. In fact, I'm catching up on Nurse Jackie right now. Up to Season 2.

What kind of set up do you have?

Yeah, you can't come in here bragging and not say what you're doing.

This is basically what I do for TV:

But I use windows instead of OS X.

I have a home server with 4TB of space..all of my TV Shows/Movies/Music is stored there. And I use Boxee Box to stream that content to my TV. Works incredibly well.

I essentially do the same thing and I'm telling you, it's not all that tough to set up.

I get HD episodes (automatically) the day after they are aired in the US, which gives me the jump on when it's actually aired here in Ireland. It sends a notification to XBMC when a new episode is ready to watch as well.

I pay $9 a month for Usenet access, on top of internet and that does away with the need for cable.

Yeah, hardest part is getting your head around how all the pieces fit together (SickBeard -> SabNZBd -> SickBeardToSab) etc. And all you really need to do is read the instructions carefully.

I have since canceled my Hulu Plus subscription. The $7.99 just wasn't worth it in comparison to what Free Hulu already offers. Plus, you still get commercials.

On the other hand, Netflix has really stepped up their Instant Streaming, especially with their television show offerings:

MacGyver, Heroes, Medium, The Ghost Whisperer, The Cosby Show, Roseanne, Lie to Me, Lost, Bones, Flashpoint, Sons of Anarchy, Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules, Merlin, Spartacus, Street Customs, Cheers, Wings, Dirty Jobs, Lonesome Dove, Lincoln Heights, Rookies, Crime 360, The First 48, Hoarders, Intervention, Parking Wars, 30 Days, Rescue Me, Grey's Anatomy, The Incredible Hulk, Highlander, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, My Name is Earl, 24, Eerie, Indiana......

All they have to do now is add Martin, The Fresh Prince, Family Matters, The Wayans Bros, and some of those other classic sitcoms, and I just may cream my pants.

And all of that for just $13 a month?

You guys doing all that extra stuff, for $1.99 total I just use an app called TV Shows Stream on my G-Slate tablet, and run HDMI cables to my TV. It has basically any show, new shows are added hours after they air, and it runs outside of the website on external android player for better quality picture.

If you're an android user, it's definitely worth checking into.
